Vincenz und Greta (2012-14) for 8 accordions

Categories -

For Eight Accordions, spatially arranged around the audience.

I wrote this piece between Jan 2012 and March 2014, in honour of my friend Nicolai Leski’s two children, Vincenz and Greta. The players are ranged around the audience in 8 evenly distributed positions, the aim being that opposing performers can “transmit” the sound from one side of the hall to the next, through the overlapping use of crescendo and diminuendo figures.

It was premiered at the 2014 Druskomanija festival, performed by musicians from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, conducted by Ruta Vitkauskaite.

I conducted the “unofficial” Chinese premiere in a lecture recital I gave at Tianjin Conservatory of Music in Oct.’15, entitled “Considerations of Time in Composition”, later conducting the “official” Chinese premiere in a concert in the TJCM concert hall in Nov.’15, the video of which is on YouTube:

We made the studio recording, with the expert help of TJCM composition department lecturer in sound recording Li Guoqi, in December ’15:

Thanks to Song Na for her amazing support in assembling 8 of her undergraduate and postgraduate accordion students to learn and perform this piece.
