and figuration\/accompaniment.\u00a0 It is also a tapestry of reminiscences, visiting Gustav Mahler,\u00a0Charles Ives, Kaikhosru Sorabji, Ferruccio Busoni, traditional Taiwanese song, Jean Barraqu\u00e9, Brian Ferneyhough and Felix Mendelssohn;\u00a0only the last of these is quoted directly, whose\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>Songs without Words <\/strong><\/em><strong>were\u00a0first published in London as <\/strong><em><strong>Original Melodies for the Pianoforte<\/strong><\/em><strong>.\u00a0 <\/strong><em><strong>Contemplation <\/strong><\/em><strong>from the second book provides the fundamental motifs for my own\u00a0<\/strong><em><strong>Originalmelodie.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><strong>The\u00a0piece broadly alternates between\u00a0passages with and without the sustain pedal, those &#8216;dry&#8217;\u00a0passages (without pedal)\u00a0tending towards the &#8216;contrapuntal&#8217;, and the &#8216;wetter&#8217; (with pedal)\u00a0tending towards figuration.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I originally wrote this piece for David Owen Norris to play in Taiwan, but he subsequently rejected it.\u00a0 This was the world premiere of the piece, given by Rolf Hind as part of the New Works Festival at Southampton University in 2010:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/georgeholloway.bandcamp.com\/track\/originalemelodie-2010-for-solo-piano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Originalmelodie (Rolf Hind, New Works Festival)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I performed this piece myself, at the &#8220;Composers at the Piano&#8221;
