Last week I received confirmation that my new nine-and-a-half minute piece for solo guzheng, titled Hook<\/em>, has been selected in the B category (plucked instruments) in the latest call for works of the Taiwan Branch of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM).\u00a0 It will receive its premiere in the 2023 edition of the Taipei International New Music Festival.<\/p>\n

The piece was quite a challenge to write, because it incorporates material from six of the main schools of guzheng playing.\u00a0 It took a lot of listening, score study\/copying, sketching and thinking to assimilate the various characteristics of the different schools and channel them into one solo piece.\u00a0 I’m thrilled that it will be heard.<\/p>\n

Programme Note for\u00a0Hook<\/em>:<\/p>\n

“Hook” for guzheng solo was created from May to June 2022, with a total duration of about nine and a half minutes.<\/p>\n

The inspiration for this work is taken from the poem written by Li Yu, a poet of the Southern Tang Dynasty, using the tune “Xiang Jian Huan”.<\/p>\n

Two images in the poem were particularly influential.\u00a0 Firstly, the simile describing the moon as a \u201chook\u201d struck the me as a potent indicator of the imprisoned poet\u2019s state of despair.\u00a0 Second, mention of the parasol tree in the deep courtyard, to the composer\u2019s mind, prompted the metaphor that follows:\u00a0 “Cut it, and it will not break; tidy it, and it returns to chaos; that is the pain of separation”.\u00a0 In other words, the poet’s emotions, like the ill-kept courtyard, tend towards chaos, and blessed ataraxia is only a fleeting state. In general terms, the piece can be taken as an evocation of both the atmosphere of the courtyard, and of the poet\u2019s mental state.<\/p>\n

Specifically, the piece is tri-rotational, comprising three wordless settings of the poem, which run through the piece as a cantilena. Each of the three settings is divided into two sections, each section modified (transcribed) to varying degress by the application of playing styles from six different traditional schools of Guzheng playing, namely, Zhejiang, Chaozhou, Henan, Shaanxi, Shandong and Hakka.\u00a0 <\/span>In addition, the musical material for each line of the poem is characterised by limited utilisation of different sets of strings, which function like vertical sets in defining the harmonic \u201cspace\u201d of each line, in the manner of Webern, Carter or Lutos\u0142<\/span>awski<\/span>.<\/p>\n

\u6211\u4e0a\u9031\u6536\u5230\u901a\u77e5\uff0c\u6211\u7684\u4e5d\u5206\u9418\u534a\u7684\u53e4\u7b8f\u7368\u594f\u4f5c\u54c1\u300a\u9264\u300b\u5728\u4e2d\u83ef\u6c11\u570b\u73fe\u4ee3\u97f3\u6a02\u5354\u6703\u6700\u65b0\u7684\u5fb5\u66f2\u4e2d\u5165\u9078B\u985e\uff08\u5f48\u64a5\u6a02\u5668\uff09\uff0c\u4e26\u5c07\u65bc2023\u5e74\u53f0\u5317\u570b\u969b\u73fe\u4ee3\u97f3\u6a02\u7bc0\u9996\u6f14\u3002<\/p>\n

\u9019\u9996\u66f2\u5b50\u7684\u5beb\u4f5c\u96e3\u5ea6\u5f88\u5927\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u5b83\u878d\u5408\u4e86\u516d\u500b\u6700\u5927\u7684\u7b8f\u6d3e\u4e4b\u7d20\u6750\u3002 \u9700\u8981\u5927\u91cf\u7684\u8046\u807d\u3001\u6a02\u8b5c\u5206\u6790\u3001\u6284\u8b5c\u3001\u8349\u7a3f\u5beb\u4f5c\u8207\u601d\u8003\uff0c\u624d\u80fd\u5438\u6536\u4e0d\u540c\u7b8f\u6d3e\u7684\u5404\u7a2e\u7279\u5fb5\uff0c\u4e26\u5c07\u5b83\u5011\u6574\u5408\u6210\u4e00\u9996\u7368\u594f\u4f5c\u54c1\u3002 \u6211\u5f88\u9ad8\u8208\u5b83\u53ef\u4ee5\u6709\u4e00\u500b\u516c\u958b\u6f14\u51fa\u3002<\/p>\n

\u4f5c\u54c1\u4ecb\u7d39\uff1a<\/p>\n

\u53e4\u7b8f\u7368\u594f\u4f5c\u54c1\u300a\u9264\u300b\u5275\u4f5c\u65bc<\/span><\/span>2022\u5e74<\/span><\/span>5\u81f3<\/span><\/span>6\u6708\uff0c\u7e3d\u6642\u9577\u5927\u7d04\u4e5d\u5206\u9418\u534a\u3002<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u672c\u4f5c\u54c1\u7684\u9748\u611f\u53d6\u81ea\u5357\u5510\u8a69\u4eba\u674e\u715c\u4f7f\u7528\u8a5e\u724c\u300a\u76f8\u898b\u6b61\u300b\u5beb\u4f5c\u7684\u8a5e\uff0c\u300c<\/span>\u7121\u8a00\u7368\u4e0a\u897f\u6a13\u300d<\/span>\u3002\u9019\u9996\u8a69\u4e2d\u6709\u5169\u500b\u5f62\u8c61\u5c0d\u4f5c\u66f2\u5bb6\u7684\u5275\u4f5c\u7279\u5225\u6709\u5f71\u97ff\u529b\u3002 \u9996\u5148\uff0c\u5c07\u6708\u4eae\u63cf\u8ff0\u70ba\u201c\u9264\u5b50\u201d\u7684\u660e\u55bb\uff0c\u5c0d\u4f5c\u66f2\u5bb6\u800c\u8a00\uff0c\u662f\u88ab\u56da\u7981\u7684\u8a69\u4eba\u7d55\u671b\u72c0\u614b\u4e4b\u6709\u529b\u8c61\u5fb5\u3002 \u5176\u6b21\uff0c\u63d0\u5230\u6df1\u9662\u88e1\u7684\u68a7\u6850\u6a39\uff0c\u4f5c\u66f2\u5bb6\u8a8d\u70ba\u5728\u8a69\u4eba\u7684\u8166\u6d77\u4e2d\u63d0\u793a\u4e86\u4ee5\u4e0b\u96b1\u55bb\uff1a\u300c<\/span>\u526a\u4e0d\u65b7\uff0c\u7406\u9084\u4e82\uff0c\u662f\u96e2\u6101\u300d<\/span>\u3002\u60c5\u7dd2\uff0c\u5c31\u50cf\u7834\u6557\u7684\u9662\u5b50\u4e00\u6a23\uff0c\u8da8\u65bc\u6df7\u4e82\uff0c\u5fc3\u795e\u5be7\u975c\u8f49\u77ac\u5373\u901d\u3002 \u7e3d\u7684\u4f86\u8aaa\uff0c\u9019\u90e8\u4f5c\u54c1\u65e2\u662f\u5c0d\u5ead\u9662\u6c1b\u570d\u7684\u559a\u8d77\uff0c\u4e5f\u662f\u5c0d\u8a69\u4eba\u7cbe\u795e\u72c0\u614b\u7684\u559a\u8d77\u3002<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u5177\u9ad4\u4f86\u8aaa\uff0c\u9019\u9996\u66f2\u5b50\u7531\u4e09\u500b\u5faa\u74b0\u7d44\u6210\u3002\u96b1\u85cf\u5728\u6bcf\u4e00\u500b\u5faa\u74b0\u88e1\u982d\u6709\u5b8c\u6574\u8a69\u8a5e\u7684\u300c<\/span>\u7121\u8072\u4e4b\u6b4c\u66f2\u300d<\/span>\uff0c\u6b64\u6b4c\u66f2\u4f5c\u70ba\u4e00\u7a2e\u7dda\u7d22\u5728\u8cab\u7a7f\u6574\u9996\u66f2\u5b50\u3002\u4e09\u500b\u5faa\u74b0\u53e6\u5916\u53ef\u4ee5\u518d\u5206\u70ba\u5169\u500b\u90e8\u5206\uff0c\u6bcf\u500b\u90e8\u5206\u5206\u5225\u61c9\u7528\u4e0d\u540c\u7b8f\u6d3e\u7279\u6709\u7684\u6f14\u594f\u65b9\u5f0f\u4f86\u8f49\u63db\uff0c\u6216\u8f49\u9304\uff08<\/span><\/span>transcribe\uff09\u4e0a\u8ff0\u6b4c\u66f2\u7684\u65cb\u5f8b\u3002\u7e3d\u5171\u6709\u516d\u7a2e\u7b8f\u6d3e\u51fa\u73fe\uff0c\u5373\u6d59\u6c5f\u3001\u6f6e\u5dde\u3001\u6cb3\u5357\u3001\u965d\u897f\u3001\u5c71\u6771\u548c\u5ba2\u5bb6\u3002<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u6b64\u5916\uff0c\u85c9\u7531\u97cb\u4f2f\u6069\u3001\u5361\u7279\u548c\u76e7\u6258\u65af\u74e6\u592b\u65af\u57fa\u7b49\u4f5c\u66f2\u5bb6\u6240\u904b\u7528\u7684\u5b9a\u4f4d\u5e8f\u5217\u4e4b\u6280\u8853\uff0c\u6bcf\u500b\u8a69\u884c\u7684\u97f3\u6a02\u6750\u6599\u6709\u56fa\u5b9a\u4f7f\u7528\u4e00\u5957\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u7434\u7d43\u4f86\u5b9a\u7fa9\u6b64\u6bb5\u843d\u7684\u300c<\/span>\u548c\u8072\u7a7a\u9593\u300d<\/span>\u6216\u300c<\/span>\u548c\u8072\u8272\u5f69\u300d<\/span>\u3002<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
