I composed Novella (Chapter One)<\/em> when I was living in Tianjin, China, during October and November 2017.\u00a0 It was commissioned by Fang Yijia and Li Xinyuan, who premiered it in Cincinatti Conservatory of Music on 1st December 2017.\u00a0 Their planned album release never came to fruition, so I’m so pleased that Thomas and Yoon have now made this recording and Parma Recordings have released it for sale.<\/p>\n

Novella (Chapter One)– <\/em>Programme Note<\/strong><\/p>\n

The piece was commissioned by Fang Yijia and premiered at the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music on 1st December 2017, in the version for \u2018cello and piano.\u00a0 The piece also exists in a version for viola and piano.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In recent pieces I have used certain different ways of forming the musical structure.\u00a0\u00a0 Three or four pieces have been strictly \u201cgeometric\u201d or \u201carchitectural\u201d, in which I proceeded from a global concept of the structure, and juxtaposed proportionally related blocks of different material to form an overall whole.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Novella <\/em>I attempt the opposite: not to think about proportion or length at all, but to proceed organically from start to finish.\u00a0 I tried above all to create a sense of dramatic narrative in the music, as if a story, the details of which we can only vaguely imagine, is being told.\u00a0 In order to do this, I actually wrote down a (true) story, and entirely followed what I felt to be dramatic motives and moods in this actual text.\u00a0 The Chinese title, which translates as Story of the Desolate City<\/em>, is more suggestive of the scenic context.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u300a\u7a7a\u57ce\u6545\u4e8b\uff08\u7b2c\u4e00\u7bc7\uff09\u300b– \u6a02\u66f2\u89e3\u8aaa<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u5728\u8fd1\u671f\u7684\u4f5c\u54c1\u4e2d\uff0c\u4f5c\u66f2\u5bb6\u8a66\u5716\u904b\u7528\u97f3\u6a02\u7d50\u69cb\u7684\u4e0d\u540c\u69cb\u9020\u65b9\u5f0f\u3002\u6709\u4e09\u6216\u56db\u90e8\u4f5c\u54c1\u662f\u4ee5\u5e7e\u4f55\u5b78\u6216\u5efa\u7bc9\u5b78\u7684\u7406\u5ff5\u56b4\u683c\u69cb\u9020\u7684\uff1a\u4f5c\u66f2\u5bb6\u4ee5\u4f5c\u54c1\u7d50\u69cb\u7684\u5de8\u96c6\u89c0\u6982\u5ff5\u70ba\u51fa\u767c\u9ede\u9032\u884c\u5275\u4f5c\uff0c\u628a\u5167\u5bb9\u4e0d\u540c\uff0c\u9577\u77ed\u6709\u6bd4\u4f8b\u95dc\u4fc2\u7684\u7247\u6bb5\u4e26\u5217\u8d77\u4f86\u800c\u5f62\u6210\u7e3d\u9ad4\u7684\u7d50\u69cb\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u5728\u300a\u7a7a\u57ce\u6545\u4e8b\uff08\u7b2c\u4e00\u7bc7\uff09\u300b\u4e2d\u4f5c\u66f2\u5bb6\u8a66\u5716\u7528\u76f8\u53cd\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\uff1a\u5b8c\u5168\u4e0d\u53bb\u8003\u616e\u5404\u90e8\u5206\u7684\u6bd4\u4f8b\u6216\u9577\u77ed\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u5f9e\u982d\u5230\u5c3e\u901a\u904e\u6709\u6a5f\u7684\u767c\u5c55\u7dda\u7d22\u9032\u884c\u5275\u4f5c\u3002\u9996\u5148\uff0c\u4f5c\u66f2\u5bb6\u8a66\u5716\u5728\u97f3\u6a02\u4e2d\u71df\u9020\u4e00\u7a2e\u6232\u5287\u6027\u7684\u60c5\u7bc0\u611f\uff0c\u4f3c\u4e4e\u97f3\u6a02\u5728\u9673\u8ff0\u6545\u4e8b\uff0c\u5118\u7ba1\u5177\u9ad4\u7d30\u7bc0\u6211\u5011\u53ea\u80fd\u5927\u81f4\u5730\u731c\u6e2c\u3002\u70ba\u6b64\uff0c\u4f5c\u66f2\u5bb6\u78ba\u5be6\u5beb\u4e86\u4e00\u500b\uff08\u771f\u5be6\u7684\uff09\u6545\u4e8b\uff0c\u5176\u6587\u5b57\u56b4\u683c\u9075\u5faa\u4f5c\u8005\u5c0d\u6545\u4e8b\u4e3b\u7dda\u88e1\u6232\u5287\u6027\u4e3b\u984c\u548c\u60c5\u611f\u7684\u611f\u53d7\u3002\u6545\u4e8b\u7684\u5834\u666f\uff0c\u53ef\u4ee5\u5f9e\u4f5c\u54c1\u7684\u4e2d\u6587\u984c\u76ee\u7372\u5f97\u4e00\u9ede\u6697\u793a\uff08\u82f1\u6587\u984c\u76ee\u5c31\u662f\u300a\u5c0f\u8aaa\u300b\uff09\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u5728\u5275\u4f5c\u904e\u7a0b\u4e2d\uff0c\u4f5c\u66f2\u5bb6\u5f97\u5230\u4e86\u4e00\u500b\u6709\u50f9\u503c\u7684\u500b\u4eba\u767c\u73fe\uff1a\u7528\u97f3\u6a02\u63cf\u8ff0\uff08\u6216\u559a\u8d77\uff09\u4e8b\u7269\u8981\u6bd4\u7528\u8a9e\u8a00\u82b1\u8cbb\u7684\u6642\u9593\u9577\u5f97\u591a\uff01\u5728\u4e03\u5206\u9418\u7684\u97f3\u6a02\u5167\uff0c\u4f5c\u66f2\u5bb6\u624d\u5b8c\u6210\u4e86\u6545\u4e8b\u9673\u8ff0\u7684\u4e0d\u5230\u56db\u5206\u4e4b\u4e00\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u672c\u4eba\u5728\u984c\u76ee\u5f8c\u9762\u52a0\u4e86\u201c\u7b2c\u4e00\u7bc7\u201d\u3002\u4f5c\u66f2\u5bb6\u5e0c\u671b\u5c07\u4f86\u53ef\u4ee5\u5b8c\u6210\u5269\u4e0b\u7684\u7ae0\u7bc0\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n
